How to protect your pet against parasites during your holidays

Going on holidays with your dog can be a risky venture. The danger for your dog varies, depending on the destination (Mediterranean countries being the worst). Some parasites (in particular mosquitos) can spread dangerous illnesses, such as leishmaniosis and dirofilariosis (heartworms), which are very common in some areas.

In order to give your dog optimal protection, we recommend:

1) To protect against mosquitos, ticks and fleas:

  • By using treatments that repel ectoparasites (spot-on or collars)
  • By keeping your pet indoor at dusk (which is when mosquitos are the most active)
  • By using mosquito nets on windows and doors

2) To treat against heartworms, lungworms, tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms

  • By worming your pet 4 weeks after the beginning of your journey. Depending on how long your holiday is, treat your dog every 4 weeks and again 4 weeks after your return.
