Vets set the example in the fight against antibiotic resistance!

Antibiotic resistance is a current debate. Inappropriate antibiotic use in human and veterinary medicine encourages the development and spread of multi-resistant germs, meaning antibiotics that are essential to cure certain infections become ineffective. We, as vets, are the first ones to act!

As from October 2019, the regulation for antibiotic use in veterinary medicine is tougher. A database to control antibiotic prescriptions in veterinary medicine (SIABV) has been put in place. Every prescribed antibiotic needs to be entered into that database with precisions about species, dosage, indication and treatment length; thus generating a fee when given out. According to the Swiss Veterinary Society, such data collection should also be compulsory in human medicine. The SVS supports the One-Health programme of the Confederation in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
